CCI Response to the Digital Service Tax

June 27, 2025

With the Digital Services Tax about to come into force in Canada, and US President Donald Trump raising the tax as an issue in ongoing trade negotiations, CCI President Benjamin Bergen issued the following statement, on behalf of our members:

“Ottawa needs to keep all options on the table because this is a negotiation, not a concession. This is also a reminder of the bigger issue: Canada needs to build real economic sovereignty, so that decisions made in Washington or Brussels don’t dictate our prosperity.

“We’ve long supported the idea that global tech giants should pay their fair share in the countries where they operate. But the Digital Services Tax hasn’t achieved that. It’s functionally a pass-through cost paid by Canadian advertisers and consumers, and it leaves our economy exposed to draconian trade retaliation.

“CCI will continue to support policymakers with insight from Canada’s top innovators as they navigate what comes next.”
