CCI's 2027 Pre-Budget Recommendations for the Prince Edward Island Government
October 20, 2026
Prince Edward Island’s expertise in oceans, defence, bioscience and agricultural technology connects the province to global markets. Helping Island companies build on those strengths means ensuring they can secure customers, commercialize their ideas and expand while remaining rooted in the province.
Budget 2027 can make government a stronger partner in that growth. Clear opportunities to compete for public contracts would help Canadian technology companies demonstrate their capabilities and generate revenue. A provincial artificial intelligence (AI) strategy would support responsible adoption across government and industry while opening opportunities for Island firms to contribute to major projects.
For growing businesses, navigating government should also become simpler. A standing forum for chief executive officers (CEOs), supported by a Red Tape Reduction Office, would help identify barriers and turn that feedback into practical reforms.
Protecting intellectual property (IP) is equally important to retaining the benefits of innovation. A provincial strategy and shared Atlantic IP agency would help Island companies protect and commercialize the technologies they develop, keeping more economic value in the province.
The Council of Canadian Innovators (CCI) is putting forward four recommendations for Budget 2027:
- Scale Canadian Technology Companies Through Innovation Procurement.
- Capture AI productivity and Commercialization opportunities through a comprehensive provincial AI strategy.
- Remove barriers to scale for PEI innovators through a Premier’s CEO Roundtable.
- Retain more commercialization value through a provincial IP strategy and an Atlantic IP agency.
